Basic strategy is how you reach the advertised price
Blackjack has a house edge like every other casino game, but it is unusually small and unusually dependent on how you play. Under basic strategy, a typical online blackjack game carries an edge of around 0.5%, meaning an expected cost of roughly half a unit per hundred staked. Very little else on the site is that cheap.
Basic strategy is not a system and it does not remove the edge. It is the complete list of the highest-value decision for every combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard, derived by working through the maths of the specific rule set. Hit, stand, double, split, surrender. There is exactly one correct answer for each situation, it never depends on what happened in previous hands, and following it is what takes the edge down to that 0.5% figure. Departing from it makes the game more expensive, and the common departures are expensive in a predictable way: standing on stiff hands out of caution, refusing to split eights, doubling too rarely.
The chart is rule-specific. A strategy table built for a game where the dealer stands on soft 17 is not the correct table for one where the dealer hits it. The difference is small per hand and real over a session, so take the chart for the game in front of you.
One more mechanical point. Online blackjack, whether software-dealt or a live stream, reshuffles constantly. RNG tables draw from a fresh shoe every hand, and live tables use shuffling machines or shallow penetration. There is no running count that survives from one hand to the next, so card counting does not transfer to these games at all. What remains is the rule set, the strategy chart and the price.
The rules on the table set the price
Two tables can both be called blackjack and cost quite different amounts. The rule list is usually behind an information or table rules tab, and it is worth opening before you sit.
The payout on a natural is the one that matters most. The standard is 3:2. Some tables pay 6:5 instead, and a few pay even money. The increase in house edge from that single change is larger than the entire edge of the 3:2 version of the same game, which means no amount of correct play recovers it. If a table pays 6:5, the cheapest decision available is to find another table.
After that, the effects are smaller but they accumulate. A dealer who hits soft 17 is worse for you than one who stands. Doubling on any two cards is better than doubling restricted to 9, 10 and 11. Doubling after a split, re-splitting, re-splitting aces and drawing to split aces all help you. Late surrender helps. Fewer decks helps slightly. A no-hole-card game, where the dealer takes your doubled and split stakes if a blackjack appears later, costs you a little more than a peek game.
None of these are hidden. They are printed, and reading them takes a minute. Sites that run several blackjack variants from several studios usually have a range of rule sets available at the same stake, which is the main argument for a wide live dealer library rather than a big lobby for its own sake.
Check limits at the same time. A table minimum that forces you to bet a large share of your budget per hand shortens the session regardless of the edge, and a low maximum can block correct doubles and splits.
Side bets, insurance and what a good blackjack site looks like
Every side bet on a blackjack table is a separate wager with its own paytable and its own house edge, and those edges are far larger than the edge on the hand itself. Perfect Pairs, 21+3, Bust It, Any Pair and the rest are typically many times more expensive per unit staked than the main game. There is nothing wrong with paying for the extra event if you want it, but be clear about what it costs. A player betting one unit on the hand and one on the side bet has roughly doubled their stake and multiplied their expected cost several times over.
Insurance is the same thing in disguise. It is presented as protection and it is actually a separate bet on whether the dealer's hole card is a ten, priced with its own edge against you. Basic strategy declines it. Even money on your own blackjack is the same bet with different wrapping.
For the site itself, a few things matter. Range of live dealer studios, because that is what gives you a choice of rule sets and stakes. Clear table information before you join. Stake limits that suit the size of your budget rather than the other way round. Fast withdrawals and a stated identity verification policy, which for table game players tends to matter more than promotions.
Bonus terms deserve special attention here. Blackjack is usually weighted low or excluded entirely from wagering requirements, precisely because its edge is small, and maximum bet rules while a bonus is active are often tight. Taking even money on your own blackjack is the same bet under another name. Declining both is the cheaper default, and the fact that it is offered at a tense moment is part of the design.
Does blackjack count towards bonus wagering?
Often only partly, and sometimes not at all. Because the edge is small, operators commonly weight blackjack at a low percentage of a wagering requirement or exclude it from the eligible games list, and they usually cap the stake size while bonus funds are in play. Read the weighting table and the maximum bet clause before you claim anything, since breaching either normally voids the bonus and whatever it won.
