The word comes from poker, where the house takes a small cut of each pot and that cut is called the rake. The player is paying for the service rather than betting against the house, and rakeback returns part of the cut.
Casino sites have borrowed the term for something related. Here, the rake is the house edge on your wagers: the portion of turnover that the operator expects to keep. Play £1,000 through a game with a 1 per cent edge, such as a title running at 99 per cent return like the Stake Originals, and you have generated £10 of expected margin. That £10 is the rake for rakeback purposes. A rakeback scheme returns a percentage of it.
This is the detail that makes the numbers make sense. If rakeback were a percentage of turnover, a 5 per cent rate would pay £50 on £1,000 wagered, which is five times what the operator expects to earn from you. Nobody offers that. A 5 per cent rakeback rate on £1,000 of turnover at a 1 per cent edge pays 5 per cent of £10, which is 50p.
So when you see a rakeback percentage, find out what it is applied to before drawing any conclusion. Some sites state it as a share of the house edge generated, some state it as a very small percentage of turnover directly, and the two can describe the same scheme. If neither is stated clearly in the terms, the figure is decoration.
Cashback pays when you lose. Rakeback pays when you wager. That difference changes the shape of the benefit completely.
A cashback scheme can pay nothing for weeks if your results happen to land above the line, and then pay a large amount after a bad run. It is lumpy and it depends on variance. Rakeback accrues on every wager at a rate you can calculate in advance, and the balance goes up whether the round was a win or a loss. Over a long period it is the more reliable of the two, and over a short one it is almost always the smaller.
That reliability is genuinely useful for a specific reason: it is the one promotional number you can build into an honest estimate of what playing costs you. Expected cost of a session is turnover multiplied by the house edge, minus rakeback. If you play £1,000 through a 1 per cent edge game, the expected cost is £10, and a rakeback scheme returning 10 per cent of the rake brings it to £9. That is a real reduction and it is a small one. Stating it plainly is more useful than any adjective a promotions page could attach to it.
Check two mechanical details. Whether all games count, since live dealer and some studios are often excluded or weighted down. And whether the accrued amount is paid as cash or as bonus funds with a wagering requirement attached, because a requirement would eat most of a payment this size. The bonus calculator will handle the comparison if a requirement is attached.
There is a structural problem inside rakeback that is worth seeing clearly, because nobody advertising it will point at it.
Rakeback pays a share of the house edge you generate. Higher edge games generate more rake per pound wagered. A game running at 94 per cent produces six times the rake of a game running at 99 per cent on the same turnover, so a rakeback scheme pays six times as much on it. The scheme rewards you most for playing the games that cost you most.
The arithmetic never favours chasing that. Going from a 1 per cent edge to a 6 per cent edge costs £50 more per £1,000 of turnover and returns perhaps £3 more in rakeback at a 10 per cent rate. You are paying five pounds to receive thirty pence. But the promotional display does not show it that way. It shows a rakeback counter going up faster, which feels like progress.
The same logic applies to volume. Rakeback rises with turnover, and tier systems make the rate itself rise with turnover, so the scheme pays you increasingly well for doing more of the thing that costs you money. Spribe's Aviator runs at 97 per cent by default and can be configured by operators at 96 or 94, Spribe's Plinko at 97 per cent, BGaming's Crash at 99, and JetX between 96.2 and 98.9 depending on configuration. The gap between the top and bottom of that range dwarfs any rakeback rate on offer, which means the game you choose matters far more than the scheme you are enrolled in. Our RTP simulator shows the difference over a realistic number of rounds.
The drip-feed mechanic deserves a mention too. Several sites let you claim accrued rakeback at short intervals, sometimes every few minutes. That is not a payment schedule, it is a reason to return to the tab, and it is designed around the same psychology as any other timed reward.
Establish the basis first. Is the percentage applied to the house edge you generated, or to turnover directly. Ask for the worked example if the terms do not give one, and if nothing clear is published, assume the figure is a marketing number rather than a term.
Then find the rate you would actually receive. Rakeback is almost always tiered, and the headline rate belongs to the top tier, which requires a volume of play that most people should not be aiming for. The rate at the tier you would realistically occupy is the one that applies to you, and it is usually a fraction of the advertised figure. A scheme that only becomes meaningful at a level of turnover you would not otherwise choose is not a benefit. It is a target the operator has set for you.
Check the eligible games, the payment form, whether accrued amounts expire if unclaimed, and whether the tier itself decays when you stop playing. Tier decay is common and it is the clearest signal of what these programmes are for: they are built to make stopping feel like losing something.
Held at the right size in your head, rakeback is fine. It is a small, steady discount on the price of the entertainment, it requires nothing of you in advance, and it does not distort which games you should play unless you let it. What it cannot do is change the edge itself. A percentage of the house edge returned to you is still less than the house edge, in every scheme, by construction. Our methodology explains how we compare these programmes, and cashback covers the sibling format that pays on losses rather than on turnover.
Rakeback pays on turnover regardless of outcome, accruing a little on every wager whether it won or lost. Cashback pays a percentage of net losses over a period and pays nothing if you finish the period ahead. Rakeback is steadier and usually smaller. Cashback is lumpier and arrives exactly when a bad run has just happened.
It depends entirely on what the 10 per cent is applied to. If it is 10 per cent of the house edge you generated, then on £1,000 of turnover at a 1 per cent edge it pays 10 per cent of £10, which is £1. That is the normal reading. A scheme paying 10 per cent of turnover would be paying out ten times what the operator earns, so it does not exist.
Yes. That is the defining feature. Rakeback accrues on wagers placed, not on results, so a winning session generates it at exactly the same rate as a losing one. This is why it is the more predictable of the two rebate formats and why it can be built into an estimate of what a session costs.
No, and the scheme quietly suggests otherwise. Higher edge games generate more rake, so rakeback pays more on them, but the extra cost of that edge is always far larger than the extra rebate. Moving from a 1 per cent edge to a 6 per cent edge costs about £50 more per £1,000 of turnover and returns a few pence more at any normal rate.
Because the advertised rate is the top tier of a loyalty programme and applies only at a volume of play most people will never reach. Your rate is the one attached to your current tier, listed in the programme table. Tiers also commonly decay if you stop playing, which is part of what the scheme is designed to discourage.
