What the maths actually guarantees, how to recognise a problem, and where to get help right now.

Every casino game is designed so that the operator keeps a percentage of everything wagered. That percentage is the house edge, and it is not a risk the operator takes: it is the arithmetic of the game.
This has two consequences that marketing never spells out.
The more you play, the more certain the outcome becomes. In a short session anything can happen, which is exactly why gambling is entertaining. Over thousands of rounds the result converges on the house edge with the same reliability that a coin lands heads about half the time. There is no strategy, staking system, time of day or "hot" game that changes this.
The edge applies to everything you wager, not to what you deposit. If you cycle $100 through $3,000 of bets, the edge is charged on $3,000. This is why "I only deposited $100" and "I have lost $400 this month" are not contradictory statements.
Gambling is a purchase, not an investment. You are buying entertainment, and the house edge is the price.
The signs below are drawn from the screening criteria used by problem gambling services. None of them on its own means you have a problem, and several of them together is worth taking seriously.
If you recognise several of these, contact one of the services below. They are free, confidential, and they exist for exactly this.
Deposit limits. Set them at the operator before you play, not during a session. A limit you set while losing is not a limit.
Self-exclusion. Most licensed operators offer it, and several countries run a central register that covers every licensed site at once: GamStop in Great Britain, and the interdiction volontaire de jeux run by the ANJ in France. Offshore operators are outside these registers, which is one of the practical costs of playing on them.
Remove the friction that helps you and keep the friction that protects you. Storing card details, keeping a balance in an account and enabling one-click deposits all make impulsive play easier. Withdrawing your balance rather than leaving it in play is the single most effective habit.
Block the access. Gamban and similar software blocks gambling sites and apps across your devices. Banks in several countries offer a gambling transaction block in their app.
Time, not just money. Set a session length and use the operator's reality-check reminder if it has one. Sessions that run long are where limits get abandoned.
Living with someone else's gambling is its own problem, and support exists for it specifically: Gam-Anon in the US, GamCare in the UK, and Joueurs Info Service in France all help relatives directly. Paying off someone's gambling debt, on its own, is generally understood to postpone the problem rather than solve it.
You must be 18 or over to gamble in most jurisdictions, and 21 or over in most US states that license online casino. Operators are required to verify age, and providing false information is a criminal offence in many places. Nothing on this site is directed at anyone under those ages.
We publish house-edge and return-to-player figures wherever they are documented, including when they are unflattering. Our RTP simulator exists to show what those numbers mean for a real bankroll, including the probability of losing it entirely. We do not publish language presenting gambling as income, and we refuse "risk-free" and "guaranteed win" framing anywhere on the site.
