Rakeback pays on turnover rather than on outcomes, which makes it the most predictable ongoing value in this industry. It does not remove the house edge, it discounts it, and the size of the discount is arithmetic you can do yourself. This page lists operators with a published rakeback scheme and explains how to price one.

Every casino game has a house edge, and the edge is charged on turnover. Stake a unit on a 1% edge game and the house expects to keep a hundredth of it, whatever happens on that particular round. Over a session your wins and losses swing widely. The amount the operator expects to take does not: it is your total turnover multiplied by the edge.
Rakeback returns a share of that expected take. The clean version works on theoretical loss. Suppose you stake 10,000 units across a game with a 1% house edge. The theoretical cost of that play is 100 units. A scheme returning 10% of theoretical loss pays 10 units back, so your expected cost falls from 100 to 90. The edge you actually pay drops from 1% to 0.9%. It is a discount on the price, not an escape from it.
The other common version pays a flat percentage of turnover rather than of the edge. That version is far more generous on low edge games and far less generous on high edge ones, which is exactly why operators usually cap it, exclude titles or weight contributions by game type. Stake Originals sit at 99% RTP, a 1% edge, and BGaming Crash is the same. European roulette charges 2.7%, American roulette 5.26%. A flat turnover rebate means something very different on each.
Some schemes pay continuously, some accrue into a balance you claim daily or weekly, and some pay only on net losses. That last one is not rakeback. It is cashback, and it trades the other way: it pays nothing in a period you finish ahead, but it never takes anything back from one either, so the same percentage paid on net losses is worth at least as much in expectation as that percentage of theoretical loss, provided it carries no cap and no wagering requirement. What cashback gives up is predictability, which is what the next section is about.
A deposit bonus is a lump of value wrapped in a condition. The condition is the wagering requirement, and until you know it you cannot price the offer at all. A headline percentage with no published requirement is not a number, it is a poster. Our bonus calculator turns a stated requirement into the turnover it implies, and the result is often larger than people expect.
Rakeback has no such wrapper on the core mechanism. It accrues per bet. You place a stake, a fraction of the edge on that stake is credited, and the credit does not depend on whether the round won or lost. There is no threshold to cross before it starts, and no outcome that cancels it. That is the whole reason it is the steadiest value on offer: it is a function of turnover, and turnover is the one thing a player controls directly.
The practical difference shows up over a long stretch of play. A bonus is a single event with a completion condition you may or may not reach. Rakeback is a rate that applies to everything, so it compounds with volume in a way you can forecast before you start. If you know roughly what you stake in a month, you can calculate what the scheme returns in a month, within the noise of which games you play.
None of this changes the direction of the maths. A discounted edge is still an edge, and more turnover still costs more money in expectation, not less. Rakeback makes the price lower. It does not make play free, and a scheme that pays a higher rate for more volume is charging you more in total while returning a larger slice of it.
Start with the base. A rate quoted as a percentage of theoretical loss and a rate quoted as a percentage of turnover are different quantities, and a difference of ten times between them is ordinary. If the terms do not say which base applies, the figure cannot be valued and should be treated as unpublished.
Then look for game weighting. Low edge titles are usually excluded or contribute at a reduced rate, because the operator is returning a share of an edge that was small to begin with. Blackjack under basic strategy typically runs at about 0.5%, and baccarat banker at 1.06%. Schemes that pay a flat turnover rate on those games rarely survive contact with a spreadsheet, which is why they are normally the first exclusions in the terms.
Check how the credit is delivered. Cash into the withdrawable balance is the strong form. A bonus balance carrying its own wagering requirement is a weaker form pretending to be the strong one, and its value depends entirely on that requirement. Check for expiry as well: accrued rakeback that vanishes after a period is only worth what you actually claim.
Check the tier mechanics. Most schemes raise the rate with lifetime wagered volume, and some reset or decay tiers after a quiet month. A rate you only hold while playing heavily is not the rate you should plan around.
Last, watch what the scheme does to your own behaviour. A rakeback rate is designed to reward volume, and volume is the thing that costs money. Deciding what you are willing to spend on entertainment first, then choosing the operator that returns most of it, is the right order. Choosing the highest rate and then finding the turnover to earn it is how a discount turns into an expense. The controls on our responsible gambling page are the practical counterweight.
No. Rakeback pays on turnover, so it accrues whether the round wins or loses. Cashback pays on net losses over a period, so it pays nothing in a period where you finished ahead, and it is usually capped. Uncapped and with no wagering attached, cashback is worth at least as much in expectation as rakeback at the same percentage of theoretical loss, because it never claws anything back from a winning period. Rakeback is the steadier of the two, not the larger. The terms will use both words loosely, so read for the base rather than the label.
No. It reduces the edge you pay, and on a normal scheme it reduces it by a fraction of itself rather than all of it. A 1% edge game with a 10% rebate on theoretical loss costs 0.9% instead of 1%. The expected direction of the money is unchanged. Treat the remaining edge as the price of the entertainment and the rebate as a discount on that price.
Because it rewards the behaviour that makes them money. Rakeback costs the operator a share of an edge it only collects if you keep staking, so it is paid out of revenue that would not exist otherwise. It is also stickier than a one-off bonus: a rate you hold at one site is a reason not to open an account at another. Both things can be true at once, which is why the scheme is genuinely useful and still built to increase turnover.
Convert both to the same base. Work out what each returns per 1,000 units staked on the specific games you actually play, using the house edge of those games. Then subtract anything the terms take back: excluded titles, weighted contributions, expiry windows, and wagering requirements attached to the credit. The scheme with the higher headline rate frequently loses on that comparison, which is why the headline is the part that gets advertised.
